Private Practice Checklist

Private Practice Checklist

Many clinicians are unsure about the necessary steps to begin a private practice, which is why we are providing this resource. In this short article, we are going to walk you through every essential aspect you need to get started in private practice.

  1. LLC/Legal Organization - get legally organized if you want to make sure that you are personally protected from the work you undertake in your business. If you need any help with that, we created a streamlined process for getting it done for clinicians.
  2. Liability insurance - you need to have malpractice insurance to see clients. Make sure you have active malpractice insurance (sometimes called professional liability insurance) and talk to an insurance agent if you’re unsure. Also consider other insurances such as a business owners policy or general liability insurance. Several different insurances may be necessary if you are
  3. Documentation - make sure that you have all of your documentation in order before you see your first client. Make sure that you will be able to process clients smoothly once they start filling your practice. Protect yourself and outline clear expectations and policies with clients. Update your paperwork quarterly.
  4. Supervision - if you are pre-licensed clinicians when you start your practice, which is 100% possible depending on your state, make sure that you have great supervision. This is a critical resource as you continue to grow, and it’s even a strong recommendation for counselors that are licensed.
  5. Physical space - you need a physical space in order to practice. If just starting out with a limited caseload, consider subleasing from another clinician to keep your expenses low. If you are operating virtually, make sure you have a dedicated space which will support you.
  6. NCE & License - ensure that you’re all good with your license and your exams. If you haven’t taken your exams, make sure you have a clear idea of when that will be.

These are the essentials that you need to get started in private practice. After that, there are accompanying business questions such as: what rate should you charge? How do you market yourself? Should you be cash pay only or use insurance?
